SK Innovation (SKI) said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Amogy that develops a carbon-free energy system using ammonia as a fuel. SKI said Amogy's ammonia power technologies can be applied to large ships and trucks as well as eco-friendly industrial mobility markets such as emissions-free forklifts, agricultural machinery, and drones.
"We will continue to build an eco-friendly portfolio through the active development and utilization of carbon-free, low-carbon energy as well as the success of this project," SKI's portfolio division head Kim Cheol-joong said in a statement on June 14.
In June 2022, Amogy demonstrated the first ammonia-powered, zero-emissions tractor. The company's ammonia-to-power system is comprised of a standard liquid-storage tank and highly efficient ammonia-cracking modules integrated into a hybrid fuel cell system, which can provide consistent primary power for several hours per refueling. Refueling a tractor with liquid ammonia is fast and simple.
Ammonia is seen as an ideal resource to establish an eco-friendly hydrogen fuel cell-based infrastructure. Ammonia is produced through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and nitrogen at high pressure and temperatures of 450 degrees Celsius. The decarbonization of ammonia production is an integral part of the global transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.
