Global demands for transdermal delivery systems have increased. In most cases, effective ingredients for the skin are not sufficiently delivered because of the stratum corneum's barrier function that prevents external ingredients whether they are good or harmful to the body. The efficacy of skin care products is often determined depending on the amount of effective ingredients delivered to the skin.
A new transdermal delivery material called "Skin Communicator" was developed using ingredients similar to intercellular lipids by Cosmax and a research team led by Lee Hyo-min, a professor of chemical engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). Skin-lightening efficacy was improved by 20 percent and wrinkle improvement by 80 percent. The rate of skin absorption was higher than in conventional products.
The research was presented at the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) in London on September 20. "The result of this study suggests a new theory in terms of the transdermal delivery system regarding the efficacy of dermo-cosmetics," Cosmax's research and innovation center head Park Myung-sam said in a statement on September 21.
Dermocosmetics is a portmanteau of dermatology and cosmetics meaning skincare products to handle many different skin conditions using effective ingredients.
