​Unclaimed Lotto prizes top $33.54 billion won last year

SEOUL -- Unclaimed Lotto prizes were estimated at 41.31 billion won ($33.54 million) last year, according to a report submitted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance to Rep. Kim Ju-young of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) on January 26.
 
The sum offered by Lotto, the most popular lottery ticket in South Korea, included one of last year’s top prizes that was valued at 2.37 billion won, 23 cases of second prizes with 1.24 billion won, and 1,421 cases of third prizes with 2.02 billion won.
 
Besides, unclaimed fourth Lotto prizes totaled 120,662 cases with their sum standing at 6.03 billion won. Unclaimed fifth prizes amounted to 29.63 billion won in 5.92 million cases.
 
The Lotto prize money will be carried over to a state lottery fund as long as winners fail to claim it within a one-year period, the ministry said.
