According to Governor Eric Holcomb of Indiana, Samsung SDI and GM will build a new $3 billion EV battery plant in Indiana, without disclosing the exact location.
"Happy to announce a joint venture between two landmark companies that will be based here in Indiana. General Motors and Samsung SDI will bring a more than $3 billion EV battery cell plant to St. Joseph County, creating 1,700 manufacturing jobs starting in 2026!" Holcomb said in a Twitter post uploaded on June 13.
The 2.65-million-square-meter factory size of 390 football fields will be operable in 2026 with an annual capacity of some 30 gigawatt-hours. Cylindrical batteries and high-nickel prismatic batteries will be manufactured at the plant and all products will be installed in GM EVs.
The Indiana joint venture factory is GM's fourth EV battery factory. When it is constructed, GM will have a total annual production capacity of more than 160 gigawatt-hours. "This joint venture and the 1,700 people there will help supply cells for millions of all-electric vehicles for customers across North America," GM CEO Mary Barra said.
