QS determines the global ranking every year based on various factors such as academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, number of citations for academic journals, employment outcomes, and the ratio of foreign faculty staff and international students. In 2023, a total of 1,500 institutions were ranked out of some 5,000. Although there is criticism that the British company ranks education facilities based on subjective evaluation criteria, it is still regarded as one of the most trusted ranking providers along with the Times Higher Education.
In the top 100 list released on June 27, a total of five South Korean universities were included -- Seoul National University (41st), Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (56th), Yonsei University (76th), Korea University (79th), Pohang University of Science and Technology (100th). Seoul National University was selected as the seventh-best institution in Asia and Yonsei University ranked the highest among Asian private universities.
Seoul National University took eighth place in the employment outcomes category which includes employment rate and graduates' reputation in each field. Pohang University of Science and Technology ranked 29th in the paper citation section.
This year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped the global ranking, followed by the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford. A total of four Japanese universities were included in the top 100 list.
