SEOUL, June 28 (AJU PRESS) - An event marking the centennial of the publication of Pablo Neruda's poetry collection was held in Seodaemun, western Seoul on Thursday.

Hosted by the Embassy of Chile to Korea, the event honored the renowned Chilean poet and reflected on his famous literary works, "Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair," which comprises 20 love poems.

Ambassador of Chile to Korea Mathias Franke highlighted Neruda's literary achievements, saying, "Neruda is one of the most preeminent Chilean poets of the 20th century." He added, "I've often talked about Chile's natural resources such as copper, lithium, and wine, but I’m very pleased to have this rare and precious opportunity to focus on Chileans who have made profound contributions like Pablo Neruda."

The event underscored Neruda's global influence on literature and culture. Hwang Soo-hyun, a professor of Spanish language at Kyunghee University who attended the event, said, "The works of one of the most beloved foreign poets in Korea will continue to enrich our lives."

Neruda, known for exploring themes of love, nature, and politics in his literary works, gained worldwide fame in 1971 when he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
