The Czech government announced on Wednesday that KHNP was chosen over French electric utility firm Électricité de France to build at least two nuclear reactors in Dukovany.
The deal would mark a significant achievement for the Korean nuclear industry, coming 15 years after Korea's successful bid for the United Arab Emirates' Barakah Nuclear Plant.
While the Czech contract is estimated to be worth 400 billion koruna, the final contract will be determined after further negotiations.
The two sides will also open negotiations on a separate project to build two more reactors in Temelin, the Czech government said.
KHNP participated in this bid alongside Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Doosan Enerbility, Daewoo E&C, and other energy firms. The consortium, known as Team Korea, will manage the entire scope of nuclear power plant construction, including design, procurement, construction, and nuclear fuel supply.
KHNP is scheduled to sign the final contract in March 2025. Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy stated that both the public and private sectors will exert every effort to ensure the success of nuclear power plant exports.
