He was discovered in cardiac arrest at his home in Seoul's Gwangjin district and was later pronounced dead.
A close acquaintance of his said, "After coming back from China the previous day, he was set to meet his manager on Monday, but he didn't answer his phone. His mother, who lives in the same apartment building on a different floor, went downstairs to check on him and found him collapsed."
Police are investigating the exact cause of his death and other related details. But they ruled out foul play since there were no signs of forced entry into the house. He did not leave behind any message.
Wheesung had been previously found unconscious several times after taking sleep-inducing drugs and sedatives. In 2020, he was investigated for abusing the anesthetic propofol on multiple occasions and was sentenced to a suspended prison term the following year.
After his debut in 2002, he enjoyed popularity with several R&B hit songs.
