SEOUL, July 2 (AJP) - More than 146,000 domestic and imported vehicles are being recalled in South Korea after defects were found, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Thursday.
The recalls cover 38 models, totaling 146,505 vehicles, from six automakers - BYD, Hyundai Motor, Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Volvo.
Volvo's recall was the largest, covering 55,405 vehicles across seven models including the XC60 due to a faulty 48-volt generator component. The defect may cause the battery and engine warning lights to illuminate or prevent the start-stop function from operating.
Hyundai is also recalling 54,792 units of the Tucson and its hybrid variant due to a software error that could cause the dashboard to flicker or go blank while driving. A software update to fix the issue will begin next week.
Chinese automaker BYD already began recalls on June 19 for vehicles across six models including the SEALION 7, ATTO 3, and DOLPHIN, after discovering that the seat belt warning could be hidden by other on-screen alerts.
European automakers have either begun or are set to begin voluntary recalls over various defects. Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis started their recalls in late June, while Jaguar Land Rover is set to begin its recall on Friday.
The ministry said motorists will be notified by mail or text message with details on how to get repairs from manufacturers or importers. Those who already paid to fix the defects before the recalls may be eligible for reimbursement under relevant regulations.
