The Eunpyeong District of Seoul has introduced an AI app that allows residents to apply for large waste disposal with just a photo.
According to Yonhap News, the district began pilot operations of the AI-based large waste disposal app, 'Take Away,' on October 19, marking the first such initiative in the country.
The 'Take Away' app automatically recognizes large waste items from photos, facilitating a one-stop process that includes fee notification, payment, and disposal application.
The district expects that using the app will reduce the time required for large waste disposal reporting from the current 15 to 20 minutes to about one minute, significantly decreasing incorrect reports and simple inquiries.
Previously, residents had to report large waste in advance. While it was possible to do so online or via an app without visiting the local community center, the process involved verifying item types and sizes and attaching a reporting certificate, which was cumbersome.
The 'Take Away' app can recognize over 156 types of waste items based on their shape and material, even distinguishing between multiple items in a single photo.
By entering their location information, users receive guidance on disposal days, fees, and separation methods according to local regulations. In Eunpyeong District, both reporting and payment for large waste disposal can be completed through the app.
This service was developed as part of the 'Public AI Transformation Project,' supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Information and Communication Industry Association.
Kim Mi-kyung, the district mayor, stated, "With the introduction of this service, we expect large waste disposal to become easier and more convenient. We will continue to actively utilize digital technologies like AI in administrative services to reduce inconveniences for residents."
