The negotiations for the construction contract of the Dukovany nuclear power project in the Czech Republic have concluded, prompting the government to activate an emergency management system led by ministers and vice ministers. The system aims to monitor the selection process for a new construction company and the project schedule weekly to prevent delays in nuclear power construction.

On November 1, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it would operate the emergency management system as a follow-up measure after the conclusion of the construction contract negotiations on October 29.

The ministry plans to quickly establish an action plan to maintain trust in the core competitiveness of the Korean nuclear industry, which is based on adherence to schedules and budgets. It will also implement measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Under the emergency management system, the entire Team Korea involved in the Czech nuclear project will share updates on project progress and key issues. The government and participating companies will collaborate to devise solutions and swiftly implement necessary actions.

To facilitate this, a 'Team Korea Czech Nuclear Project Progress Review Meeting' chaired by the minister and a 'Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Progress Review Meeting' chaired by the vice minister will be held weekly in alternating sessions.

The first meeting will take place at 10 a.m. on the same day, chaired by Vice Minister Park Dong-il. The agenda will include discussions on key operational strategies following the conclusion of the construction contract negotiations, the process and timeline for selecting a new construction company, plans for timely achievement of major project milestones, and follow-up actions related to the construction contract.

In particular, the meeting will review plans to ensure that key timelines, including the application for construction permits in April 2027, the start of site preparation in January 2029, and the commencement of construction in November of the same year, are met without delays.

Minister Kim Jeong-kwan emphasized, "The competitiveness of Korean nuclear power lies in the 'team spirit' formed by the capabilities of individual companies. We must strengthen Team Korea to prepare for numerous future nuclear export opportunities." He added, "For the time being, the ministers and vice ministers will directly operate the emergency management system to review project issues weekly and take necessary actions."
