South Korean Prime Minister Han Seung-soo has ordered urgent measures to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) following its first occurrence this winter.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, Han issued the directive after receiving reports of confirmed cases of highly pathogenic AI at a layer farm in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province. He emphasized the need for vigilance and thorough initial quarantine efforts to prevent further spread.

He instructed authorities to implement strict biosecurity measures, including access control to the affected farm, culling of infected birds, movement restrictions for farms within the quarantine zone, and thorough disinfection protocols.

Han also called for movement restrictions on poultry farms and related facilities. He stressed the importance of managing temporary movement halts for poultry farms, livestock facilities, and transport vehicles to prevent transmission between farms.

Additionally, he directed the strengthening of surveillance systems for wild birds and migratory bird habitats. Han urged the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment to enhance monitoring and inspection of wild birds, control access to migratory bird habitats, and for local governments, including Gyeonggi Province, to conduct weekly inspections of biosecurity measures at layer farms.

Han noted, "As this is the first occurrence of highly pathogenic AI this winter, we must respond proactively," and urged farmers to strictly adhere to biosecurity protocols and report any suspected symptoms of avian influenza to authorities immediately.
