North Korea's rice production is likely to decrease 5.6 percent or 100,000 tons this year from 2012, a U.N. agency reported Tuesday.

According to the Food Outlook of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the communist state's rice production is expected to reach 1.7 million tons, a decrease from 1.8 million tons tallied last year.

Accordingly, Pyongyang is forecast to import 300,000 tons of rice this year, a level similar to those of last year, and its rice stockpile will likely amount to merely 100,000 tons, the lowest level among 18 Asian countries surveyed, the report said.

The North Korean rice production averaged 1.6 million tons between 2009 and 2011, it said.
