Gov't to raise fuel efficiency standard for vehicles

The government plans to further raise fuel efficiency standards for vehicles as part of efforts to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, officials said on Monday.

Beginning in 2020, the fuel efficiency requirement for cars with 10 seats or less will be raised to 20km per liter, according to the officials at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The government had planned to hike the fuel efficiency standards to 17km per liter by 2015.

Violators will face fines.
