Extending condolences to the families of those who were killed in the sinking of a ferry, the country’s sports circles have canceled or scaled down their planned events.

South Korean players abroad also expressed their condolences to the victims of the tragedy and bereaved families.

Ryu Hyun-jin, a starting pitcher of the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB), tweeted: "I hope everyone will return safely to their family."

Golfer Pak Se-ri wore a black ribbon for the victims of the disaster during the second round of the LPGA LOTTE Championship in Kapolei, Hawaii, Thursday (local time).

The KBO said Thursday it asked its clubs to minimize the use of loudspeakers and cancel cheerleaders' performances during weekend games.

The K League, operator of two professional football leagues, sent an official document to 22 clubs, advising them not to hold promotional events and cheering activities during weekend matches.

It also postponed a second-division K League Challenge match scheduled to take place in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, Sunday. In other matches, players are asked to refrain from showing a goal ceremony.

The Korea Ice Hockey Association is no exception. It plans to cancel cheerleaders’ performances and a laser show for the Division 1 Group A competition of the International Ice Hockey Federation, which is set to open in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, Sunday.

Of 475 people on board the ill-fated ferry, 25 were killed and 271 others remain missing, according to the authorities. The remaining 179 people were rescued.
