"Assassination," an ode to Korean independence fighters during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula (1910-1945), has grossed US$1.8 million (approximately 2.1 billion Korean won) in North America since its opening there on Aug. 7, its local distributor said Tuesday.

The movie earned $1.8 million as of Sept. 10, making it the fourth largest grossing South Korean film in North American theaters, according to the distributor, Showbox.

"Roaring Currents (2014)" about a 16th-century Korean naval hero who defeated invading Japanese in the late 16th century, grossed more than $2.5 million in the North American box office, becoming the highest grossing Korean film of all time in North America.

The figure compares with $2.3 million for "Ode to My Father (2014)," a drama film that depicts modern Korean history from the 1950-53 Korean War to the present day through the life of an ordinary man, and $2.2 million for monster flick "The Host (2006)."
