Prince Harry and his American actress girlfriend, Meghan Markle, announced their engagement Monday morning. The wedding will take place in spring 2018.
The couple has been together for more than a year. Kensington Palace confirmed their relationship on November 8, 2016, after Markle's life and her family became the tabloids' favorite menu. Prince Harry asked the people to kindly stop "abuse and harassment" of Markle and her family in a statement.
Once Prince Harry and Markle get married, they will be living at Nottingham Cottage on the Kensington Palace grounds in London. The engagement ring Markle received was custom designed by Prince Harry and it has two diamonds from his mother late Princess Diana's jewelry collection.
The couple made their first official appearance as an engaged couple in a media photocall at the Kensington Palace Sunken Garden. Markle said she was "so very happy" and Prince Harry said he was "thrilled, over the moon". He also revealed that he knew his 36-year-old fiancee was "the one" from the moment he first saw her. Then the lovebirds had their first joint interview with BBC Mishal Husain.
When they were asked about their plan for children, Prince Harry who is 33-year-old answered they are not planning to have children anytime soon but added, "one step at a time and hopefully we'll start a family in the near future."
This engagement is garnering so much more attention because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding will be setting a new record for British royal family. Markle is going to be the first biracial princess by marriage to enter the Kensington ground. Also, this is not the first marriage for Markle. She will be the first American divorcee to be a British royal. In 1936, when King Edward VIII refused to end his relationship with his American girlfriend Wallis Simpson who was married twice before meeting him. In the end, King chose his love and abdicated the throne to marry her. Fortunately for Prince Harry and Marke, the British royals are ready to accept an American commoner who is biracial and is a divorcee.
Queen Elizabeth gave her blessing to the couple after meeting the American actress. Prince William and Kate Middleton also congratulated the couple in a statement, "We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together."
