SEOUL -- Hanwha Systems, a key defense contractor in South Korea, will release an intelligent thermal imaging engine module called "Quantum Red" that strengthened temperature measurement functions. The company thinks the new module will increase the reliability of thermal imaging cameras for detecting human heat and can be applied to night vision sensors for self-driving technologies.

Quantum Red consists of an optical meter, a detector and a signal processing module, Hanwha Systems said, adding it has the potential for various applications in medical services, smart farms and other fields that require absolute temperature measurement. The company also targets firefighting, leisure, and urban aviation mobility.

"Quantum Red is a high-tech product integrating technology and experience related to electronic optics that we have accumulated over the past 40 years," Hanwha Systems CEO Kim Yeon-chul said. "We will foster it as another new future business."

Hanwha Systems said that it has installed infrared image signal processing technology into an integrated circuit called System on Chip (SoC) that integrates all or most components of a computer or other electronic system. As a result, Quantum Red can process high-definition thermal imaging signals at high speed as it becomes smaller and lighter than other thermal imaging engine modules. It can reflect detailed requirements such as image quality and temperature measurement range only by changing software.

A blackbody is an important contributor to accurate thermography. It has been widely used for thermal imaging cameras. Hanwha Systems adopted temperature reference source module (TRSM) technology that can be integrated with a camera without a separate black body, reduce cost and increases convenience. The error range of temperature measurement can be reduced to within ±0.3℃.
