SEOUL -- LS Cable & System, a major cable maker in South Korea, has localized liquid-cooled ultra-fast cables that can be used for charging electric vehicles. The company improved a method used by European companies to reduce the possibility of failure due to the leakage of coolant.

According to South Korea's charging standards, ultra-fast chargers for 400 kilowatts or higher must be liquid-cooled. Their charging speed is twice faster as air-cooled chargers for 50 to 250 kW.

Charging cables generate extremely hot heat because of high voltage and fast charging. Liquid cooling cables can suppress an increase in temperature using the liquid that flows inside cables. Although their size is smaller than the air-cooling type, they can send more currents. The thickness and weight of cables can be reduced by nearly half, making it easy for old people and the weak to handle.

Liquid-cooled charging cables have largely relied on imports from European companies. LS Cable has completed patent registration in the U.S. and Japan. The cable maker would expand its electric vehicle parts business by supplying windings for motors, high voltage harnesses, aluminum wires and charging guns to automobile and battery manufacturers.

As a state project to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, Seoul will replace 10 percent of diesel vehicles with electric vehicles by 2026. About 45,000 EVs were registered in Seoul. The number of chargers in Seoul will increase from more than 20,000 to 35,000 at the end of 2022.
