SEOUL -- Through digital twin technology, a sprawling complex housing various government organizations will be implemented in 3D in a virtual space so that caretaker avatars can patrol and check the condition of firefighting, electricity, and lighting-related facilities.

Digital Twin technology enables the creation of virtual clones of real-life objects and environments. The technology is used to test dangerous equipment or simulate disastrous situations without causing catastrophic damage to the real world.

LG CNS, the information technology wing of South Korea's LG Group, said it has been selected for a project to digitally transform a government complex in the central city of Sejong by April 2023. The company will establish an integrated control system using digital twin, a private 5G network, big data and artificial intelligence.

The AI control system will be used to respond quickly to abnormal situations and make optimal decisions by analyzing images taken on 2,000 CCTVs. LG CNS said that the control room can quickly recognize fires, intrusion and other abnormal situations while detecting abnormalities in facilities.

LG CNS will establish walk-through gates with security and convenience. Using a complex authentication method that combines mobile ID app authentication and AI face recognition, workers just have to turn on the app and pass through the entrance gate. Even if they wear face masks, AI accurately recognizes their face. LG CNS has formed a consortium with Cubox, a domestic AI face and image recognition company.

"We will maximize security, control, and operational efficiency through the digital transformation of the Sejong government complex and improve convenience to the public," LG CNS' smart SOC team head Yoo In-sang said in a statement on July 19.

LG CNS will strengthen data security by applying a private 5G network customized for services in specific regions that affords numerous advantages for modern enterprises as it can deliver ultra-low latency and incredibly high bandwidth connections supporting artificial intelligence-driven applications.

South Korea has commercialized a 5G mobile telecom service using the frequency band of 3.5 GHz. For private 5G networks, the government will provide the 28 GHz band that makes data transmission speed faster especially in areas where traffic is concentrated.

Without borrowing 5G networks built by mobile carriers, companies that want to provide 5G-based convergence services can build private 5G networks in specific regions. The private 5G network affords numerous advantages for modern enterprises as it can deliver ultra-low latency and incredibly high bandwidth connections supporting artificial intelligence-driven applications.
