SEOUL -- Pyongyang has conducted another test for its "secret weapon" called "Haeil-1," following a drill guided by the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un from March 21 to 23. According to Pyongyang's state media agency, the nuclear underwater drone is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to detonate near a fleet of warships or naval ports to create a radioactive tidal wave.
North Korea's state-operated Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said through a statement uploaded to its website on March 28 that Pyongyang has held another test for its strategic weapon system. The nuclear underwater drone was deployed near Wonsan Bay some 150 kilometers east of Pyongyang on March 25 and reached the target point some 600 kilometers away on March 27 and fired off its test warhead underwater.
Pyongyang's state media also released photos of Kim inspecting a smaller-sized nuclear warhead called "Hwasan-31," capable of being fitted into short-range missiles that are smaller than their long-range and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Kim inspected about 10 dark green-painted nuclear warheads inside a display room. A three-dimensional diagram displayed in the background of a picture of Kim Jong-un showed that Hwasan-31 can be fitted into different types of North Korean missiles.
North Korea has been busy showing off its military capabilities for the last few weeks. On March 27, Pyongyang fired off two short-range missiles into the East Sea while Seoul was conducting a joint military drill with the United States. It was the eighth missile launched by North Korea in 2023. North's military actions follow a series of warnings from, Kim Yo-jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong-un, who strongly condemned Seoul and Washington for conducting joint military exercises which would bring war back to the Korean peninsula.
