A joint team from the company and the Robotics Innovatory of Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul participated in the Grasping and Manipulation Competition, part of the annual International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) held in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, from May 13 to 16.
The team's Robotic Piece Picking Solution for Logistics won second prize among seven competitors, including those from Japan's Kanazawa University and China's Tsinghua University.
The robot incorporates an artificial intelligence algorithm that autonomously identifies objects and selects secure spots to grasp without needing pre-registered object information in its system.
Based on the solution, a cooperative robot can transport up to 950 items weighing up to 5 kilograms (11 pounds) each within an hour.
"This will be an opportunity for Aidin to gain a competitive edge not only in the overseas market but also in the domestic robot market, which has been heavily reliant on foreign products," Aidin CEO Lee Yun-haeng said in a press release.
Hosted by the United States-based Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, ICRA is one of the premier conferences on robotics solutions in the world.
