The two-day virtual meeting, which commenced on Tuesday, builds upon the inaugural AI Safety Summit held in November 2023 at Bletchley Park, Britain.
The leaders adopted a joint statement outlining their agreements to collaborate on establishing AI safety research institutes and enhancing cooperation among these entities.
"We acknowledge the need for a reliable, interdisciplinary, and reproducible body of evidence to inform policy efforts related to AI safety," the leaders said in the Seoul Declaration. "We recognize the role of scientific inquiry and the benefits of international coordination for the advancement of such inquiry, so that ultimately the benefits of AI development and deployment are shared equitably around the globe."
The summit includes leaders' and ministerial sessions. The leaders' session was co-chaired by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and attended by leaders of 12 countries and international organizations including the United Nations and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Representatives from 11 companies, including Google DeepMind, Samsung Electronics, Naver and OpenAI, were also in attendance.
The ministerial session is scheduled to be held in person at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in Seoul starting at 2:20 p.m. (0520 GMT) on Wednesday. Korean Science and ICT Minister Lee Jong-ho and U.K. Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology Michelle Donelan will co-chair the ministerial session.
