SEOUL, June 20 (AJU PRESS) - The Korean government on Thursday announced plans to support the development of materials and components technologies to enhance the domestic defense industry.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said that they have finalized a development roadmap for materials and components in five defense-related sectors – space, artificial intelligence (AI), hybrid unmanned-manned systems, robotics and semiconductors. The government has selected 60 core technologies in these fields for focused technological development.
"We will prioritize the development of defense materials and components technologies with high domestic ripple effects," a ministry official said. The core technologies to be developed include advanced aircraft engine materials with high civil-military dual-use potential, world-class next-generation hybrid powertrains for main battle tanks and multi-band transceiver modules for unmanned aerial vehicles.
The government has established a consultative body to continuously monitor the implementation of the development roadmap and strengthen inter-agency collaboration in identifying cooperative research and development projects in the defense materials and components sector.
