Luxembourg opens embassy in Seoul with Korean War exhibition

SEOUL, July 3 (AJU PRESS) - A special exhibition featuring Luxembourg's participation in the Korean War kicked off its three-month run in Yongsan, Seoul on Tuesday.

Hosted by the War Memorial of Korea, the exhibition coincides with the opening of Luxembourg's diplomatic mission in Jongno, central Seoul and aims to further strengthen the bond between the two countries.

Over 60 artifacts, including handwritten personal diaries and photo albums, are on display, offering a glimpse into the experiences of Luxembourgish war veterans who fought alongside South Korea over seven decades ago.

Luxembourg dispatched 85 soldiers to support South Korea during the Korean War (1950~1953), despite having a population of only around 200,000 and a military force of just 1,000 at the time.

Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel said that people often take freedom "for granted," but he stressed its importance, adding that it must be fought for "not just in the past, in the present but also in the future."

President of the War Memorial of Korea Baek Seung-joo expressed his gratitude for "the sacrifice of young soldiers who came to a faraway land in Asia and fought for peace and freedom." He added, "It is very meaningful to celebrate the opening of Luxembourg's embassy in Seoul, with this exhibition honoring their war veterans."

The exhibition runs until Sept. 29.
