SEOUL, August 1 (AJU PRESS) — Korea's cumulative electric vehicle (EV) registrations have surpassed 600,000 units for the first time in the first half of this year, data showed Thursday.

According to the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA), EV registrations reached 606,610 by the end of June,  a 24-fold increase since official EV statistics began in 2017.

The adoption of EVs has accelerated rapidly since 2020, when registrations first exceeded 100,000 units. Since then, annual growth has consistently met or surpassed 100,000 units. During the first half of 2024, 62,710 new EVs were registered.

Hyundai Motor leads with the highest share of registered EVs at 39.8 percent, followed by its affiliate Kia with 27.4 percent and Tesla with 13.3 percent. Trailing behind are BMW with 3.3 percent, Mercedes-Benz with 3.1 percent, GM Korea with 2.6 percent and Renault Korea with 1.7 percent.

Charging infrastructure has also expanded significantly, with 361,163 chargers installed nationwide as of May, resulting in a ratio of 1.64 EVs per charger. It marks a 50.1 percent increase compared to the same time last year.
