SEOUL, August 23 (AJU PRESS) - Despite concerns about major earthquakes following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Japan this month, the number of travelers flying from Korea to Japan has increased compared to last year.

According to data from Incheon International Airport Corp. and Korea Airports Corp., about 1,385,000 travelers used Japan routes, including both departures and arrivals, at domestic airports from Aug. 1 to 20.

This represents a 20.8 percent increase from a year ago and a 6.3 percent increase from last month.

Of these travelers, 989,000 passengers used Incheon International Airport, while 396,000 used six international airports managed by Korea Airports Corp.

Since the resumption of visa-free entry into Japan in October 2022, the number of travelers using flights on Japan routes has continued to rise.

Even during the period from Aug. 8 to 15, when the Japanese government issued a major earthquake warning due to the earthquake in Miyazaki Prefecture in southern Kyushu, 558,000 passengers used Japan routes, a 26.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
