SEOUL, October 29 (AJP) - BMW has maintained its leading position in South Korea's imported SUV market this year, industry data showed Tuesday.

The German luxury automaker topped imported SUV registrations in the first nine months of 2024 with 21,985 units, according to figures from the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association.

It outperformed Mercedes-Benz, which recorded 16,972 units. Tesla ranked third with 13,981 units, followed by Volvo Cars and Lexus with 8,639 and 4,805 units, respectively.

Overall, imported car registrations contracted by 1.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

BMW's X3 2.0 model dominated the premium SUV segment with 3,512 registrations. Other models in the company’s lineup, including the X4 2.0, X5 4.0, and X7 4.0, each exceeded 2,000 units in sales.

The company's MINI brand also performed strongly in the compact SUV category, with its Countryman model recording 2,157 units, a 10 percent increase from the previous year. The Countryman stands as the only compact imported SUV to surpass 2,000 units in sales.
