During a Security Council meeting in New York on Wednesday, North Korean Ambassador to the United Nations Kim Song accused the international community of being deceived by the U.S. and its allies who he claimed are attempting to "cover up the root cause of the outbreak" of the war in Ukraine.
"The Ukrainian crisis was started by the United States and Western forces that ignored a legitimate security interests and the right to territorial integrity or Russia," he claimed.
When questioned by U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood about its troop deployment to Russia, Kim merely said that his country would "faithfully fulfill" its obligations under the bilateral treaty with Moscow, hinting that it continues to maintain its strong relations with Russia.
The treaty refers to the comprehensive strategic partnership, signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Pyongyang in June, which pledges to provide mutual military assistance in case of aggression against either of them.
But Wood said, "Suffering more than 1000 Russian casualties per day, Russia introduced over 10,000 [North Korean] troops to the battlefield." He further elaborated that the North "has also unlawfully transferred over 18,000 containers of munitions and munitions-related materiel and more than 100 ballistic missiles for use against Ukraine."
South Korean envoy to the UN Hwang Joon-kook also pointed out, "The war in Ukraine is becoming further complicated with [North Korea's] full involvement." He added, "About 11,000 North Korean soldiers have been dispatched to Russia, and some of them are now actively engaged in combat operations in Kursk Oblast."
