Diplomats, leaders celebrate launch of AJP news agency

SEOUL, December 3 (AJP) - AJP, a new English-language news agency, set sail on its journey with a launch ceremony in Yeouido, Seoul on Tuesday.

Hundreds of global luminaries, including a score of ambassadors from foreign missions and embassies, as well as lawmakers and political leaders, influential figures, experts from various fields, journalists, and other distinguished guests, gathered to celebrate its inaugural step toward becoming Asia's leading news hub.

The launch event at FKI Tower in Seoul's financial district of Yeouido kicked off at 5 p.m. with an opening address by Kwak Young-kil, chairman of Aju News Corporation.

Expressing his ambitious vision for the future, he pledged to fulfill AJP's mission of establishing itself as a beacon for Asia's most reliable and trustworthy news sources, upholding truth through "unbiased news reporting by Asians, for Asians, and of Asians" in an era swamped by floods of fake news and misinformation.

Pointing out the ongoing global challenges such as divisions, inequalities, and regional conflicts and tensions, he stressed the need for "fresh approaches."

"This is why AJP exists - to foster unity, peace, and prosperity through journalism that champions truth, fairness, and integrity," Kwak said.

In his congratulatory speech, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo welcomed the establishment of AJP at an opportune time, when South Korea "has become a key player in global security, contributing to the promotion of freedom and peace worldwide." Han added, "I hope AJP will grow into a trusted news agency," while striving for "impartiality, fairness, and truthfulness."

Kim Sang-hoon from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) called for AJP to help support South Korean businesses in making inroads into the global market, while Jin Seong-jun from the Democratic Party (DP) said he is confident that AJP will successfully play its role as a voice for Asia.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Lee Jae-myung, the DP's leader, and several other lawmakers and politicians including Kim Gi-hyeon from the PPP and Jung Myung-geun, the mayor of Hwaseong in Gyeonggi Province, sent their written messages to congratulate AJP on its new journey. Governor of Gyeonggi Province Kim Dong-yeon sent a congratulatory video message.

About an hour before the event's opening, pre-lecture sessions also drew great attention from participants, offering insights into the revolutionary forces of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality, as well as the global impact of K-pop.

Lee Jung-soo, CEO of Flitto, a platform providing real-time translation services in over 25 different languages, received a warm round of applause as he took the stage as the first lecturer of the day. He discussed how AI has dramatically transformed its services, allowing its users to communicate without language barriers. Despite some remaining challenges, he looked forward to even more exciting opportunities ahead.

Kim Kwang-jib, CEO of the AI-specialized startup Studio Meta-K, also gave lucid explanations about ongoing trends in AI-generated or AI-assisted works and creations using virtual reality, which are expanding into diverse fields with limitless possibilities in a cost-effective manner.

Kim's eye-opening lecture on innovative future technologies was followed by Park Sung-jin, CEO of the World K-Pop Center. Park, who has extensive experience nurturing idol groups, shared his vision for further propelling K-pop's global success.

The finale of Tuesday's event was a performance by the Chinese unit of K-pop girl band BlingOne. The septet without any South Korean members, who were formed through a global audition project, captivated the stage with their brilliant dance moves and dazzling songs.

Based in Seoul, AJP, an affiliate of Aju News Corporation, is dedicated to delivering both global and local news from Asia’s perspective, serving as Asia's voice to readers around the world.
