SEOUL, December 6 (AJP) - South Korean prosecutors and police launched separate investigations Friday into the Dec. 3 martial law incident, with both agencies assembling large-scale investigative teams.

The Supreme Prosecutors' Office announced the formation of a special investigation headquarters led by Seoul High Prosecutors' Office Chief Park Se-hyun.

The move comes just one day after Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung directed prosecutors to conduct a direct investigation into the case.

Prosecutors have already imposed a travel ban on former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who allegedly proposed the martial law declaration to President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The prosecution's special investigation unit is similar in scale to the one formed during the 2016 investigation into former President Park Geun-hye's corruption scandal.

The National Police Agency formed a 120-member investigation team under the leadership of Song Young-ho, head of the security investigation division.

The police have received four criminal complaints against President Yoon and other top officials, including allegations of insurrection under Article 87 of the Criminal Code.

The simultaneous investigations by both agencies have raised questions about potential jurisdictional conflicts.

A police official emphasized that "direct investigation of insurrection charges falls under police jurisdiction."
