Once held, the questioning is set to take place four days after the National Assembly passed a motion to impeach the president, suspending him from his duties immediately. The impeachment motion was approved with 204 votes in favor, 85 against, three invalid votes, and eight abstentions, surpassing the two-thirds majority required in the 300-seat National Assembly.
The joint team, formed on Dec. 11, includes members from the National Police Agency's Joint Investigation Headquarters, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO), and the Ministry of National Defense's Investigation Headquarters.
However, prosecutors were not included in the team, raising concerns about potential conflicts between the investigators and prosecutors. The situation is particularly notable given Yoon's background as a former prosecutor who spearheaded the 2017 probe that led to the impeachment of former disgraced President Park Geun-hye.
Separately, prosecutors handling Yoon's failed martial law attempt said on Sunday that they had summoned the president last week to appear at the Seoul Central District Court for questioning. However, Yoon refused to respond to the summons, citing that his legal defense team had not yet been finalized.
