Yoon's longtime friend and legal representative Seok Dong-hyun told reporters that Yoon has formed a legal defense team to handle his impeachment trial and investigations related to his short-lived martial law attempts earlier this month.
According to Seok, Bae Bo-yoon, a former scholar who served as the court's spokesperson during the impeachment trial of former disgraced President Park Geun-hye from 2016 to 2017, has joined Yoon's legal defense team and is set to appear at the hearing scheduled for 2 p.m.
The team also includes Kim Hong-il, former head of the Korea Communications Commission, and Yun Gap-geun, a former high-ranking prosecutor.
The hearing is a procedure in which both parties present their positions, and the court outlines a plan for the trial. While the formal trial is conducted by the full panel of judges, the preparatory hearing is usually presided over by two senior judges.
The court allocated 18 seats in the courtroom for the public, with nine of them assigned through an online lottery, resulting in fierce competition as over 20,000 people applied.
The remaining nine seats will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the court's main entrance, about an hour before the hearing begins.
