SEOUL, February 03 (AJP) - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will visit South Korea on Tuesday for a private workshop with local developers and to announce a strategic partnership with the country’s tech company, Kakao, according to sources.
The event, dubbed "Builder Lab," will take place at Seoul’s Plaza Hotel, reflecting the intensifying global race in artificial intelligence. Altman’s visit marks his third trip to South Korea, following previous stops in June 2023 and January 2024, when he toured Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek chip factory.
During his stay, Altman is expected to appear alongside Kakao CEO Jung Shin-a at a press conference to formally announce the collaboration. Kakao, which introduced its AI-powered "Khanana" service last year, is reportedly pursuing a strategy that could integrate OpenAI’s technology into its platforms.
Altman’s itinerary also includes a meeting with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, following previous discussions in January at Seoul’s Walker Hill Hotel and in June at OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco. Additionally, he is set to meet with executives from Samsung Electronics.
OpenAI, which currently maintains offices in Japan and Singapore, is said to be considering a South Korean branch as part of its broader expansion in Asia.
