First Meeting of Korean Community in Belgium: President Lee Compares Role of Diplomats to Local Leaders

President Lee Jae-myung stated on June 9 that the role of the Korean ambassador to Belgium is akin to that of a local community leader. Speaking at a dinner meeting with the Korean community in a hotel in Brussels, he emphasized that overseas diplomatic missions should strive to fulfill all expectations until there are none left. This meeting marks the first time a sitting South Korean president has engaged with the Korean community in Belgium during an official visit.

President Lee remarked, "It is natural for government-to-government interactions to occur, but beyond that, we should also serve as a platform for cultural and industrial outreach and support for overseas Koreans." He expressed surprise that this was the first such meeting in Belgium's history.

He noted that living in a developed country like Belgium likely fosters a unique perspective on South Korea, stating, "The evaluation of South Korea has dramatically changed in a short period." He reflected on the transformation from a nation that once relied on aid to one that is now perceived as a center of global culture.

President Lee emphasized the importance of supporting the achievements planned by the Korean community, stating, "While we may not be able to provide direct financial assistance, there are policy measures we can implement, and I believe that enhancing South Korea's national status is the most significant form of support."
