The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has officially launched a collaborative platform aimed at establishing a high-speed network ecosystem between AI data centers.
On June 24, ETRI announced the founding of the Hyper Service Interconnect (HINT) Forum to promote research on next-generation interconnection technologies and standardization activities both domestically and internationally. The demand for large-scale computational resource sharing and real-time data transmission between data centers has surged due to the proliferation of generative AI and super-large AI services, making high-speed, low-latency, and high-capacity network technologies essential infrastructure in the AI era.
The HINT Forum will focus on researching next-generation technologies in areas such as AI data center networks, core and backbone networks, access and metro networks, and industrial convergence networks including smart factories and autonomous driving. ETRI researchers are currently developing technologies for ultra-low latency, lossless, high-bandwidth optical packet transmission networks between AI data centers, open transport network fabric operating systems based on AI workloads, and standardization technologies for network ecosystems.
ETRI is also participating in the Ministry of Science and ICT's 'Leading Project for Data Center Network Infrastructure Technology,' which includes the development of transmission technologies for horizontal AI resource expansion in data centers, as well as scale-up and scale-out technologies based on optical networks and the establishment of equipment verification environments.
The founding general meeting and workshop of the forum were held over two days starting June 11 at Gonjiam Resort in Gyeonggi Province, attended by approximately 90 experts from industry, academia, and research. The event included a kickoff meeting for the AI data center network consortium and the presentation of a plaque for the 'Data Center Network Specialized Research Center' designated by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
Kang Tae-kyu, a senior researcher at ETRI, stated, "In the AI era, not only computing resources but also the network technologies that efficiently connect them will be key factors determining national competitiveness. We hope the HINT Forum will establish itself as a collaborative platform leading domestic AI network technologies and standardization ecosystems."
