Lotte Cinema-Megabox Merger Abandoned as Lotte Pursues Independent Growth Strategy

Lotte Cultureworks has halted the merger process with Megabox Central, which had been in progress. Lotte Shopping announced on July 1 that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed for the merger was terminated on June 30, leading to the cessation of related procedures.

The financial crisis facing the Jungang Group and the initiation of rehabilitation proceedings for Contentree Central appear to have influenced the decision to abandon the merger.

The merger was anticipated to significantly reshape the domestic multiplex industry, but its suspension effectively nullifies the plan.

Moving forward, Lotte Cultureworks is expected to focus on enhancing its competitive edge and securing growth drivers independently.

Recently, buoyed by a recovery in the film market, Lotte Cultureworks achieved profitability in the first quarter of this year. The company plans to improve the viewing experience by introducing recliner seats, state-of-the-art projectors, and specialized sound theaters, while also strengthening its content competitiveness through the acquisition of intellectual property (IP).

Additionally, Lotte Cultureworks aims to expand its business beyond film screenings, including international ventures for immersive and experiential performance brands and co-producing musicals.
