SK Hynix plans to invest a total of 100 trillion won in semiconductor production in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. This investment aims to establish Cheongju as a key hub for memory semiconductors in response to the growing demand for NAND and enterprise SSDs driven by the expansion of AI technology.

On July 2, SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung announced the company's semiconductor and AI investment plans for the Chungcheong region during the "Chungcheong Advanced Industry Development Vision National Report Meeting" held at the Samsung Display Asan Campus in Asan, South Chungcheong Province.

The company plans to invest 80 trillion won in the NAND production fab M17 and 20 trillion won in advanced packaging initiatives such as P&T7. The P&T7 facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, while construction of M17 is set to begin next year, with operations targeted for the first half of 2029.

This investment is seen as a strategy to enhance the AI semiconductor supply chain by consolidating NAND production, advanced packaging, and AI data centers within the Chungcheong region.

Kwak stated, "Cheongju can improve production efficiency by connecting with existing fabs, and it has substantial land, power, and water resources. It is the best location for building a NAND fab quickly and efficiently."

SK Group is also pursuing the establishment of a 1GW AI data center in the Chungcheong region. This initiative aims to link semiconductor production facilities with AI computing infrastructure, positioning the region as a global hub for AI semiconductor innovation.

Kwak emphasized, "We will reposition Cheongju as a core hub driving the competitiveness of South Korea's memory semiconductor industry and develop the Chungcheong region into a center for global AI innovation."
