The South Korean Navy has named its new 3,600-ton submarine, part of the Jangbogo-III Batch-II class, 'Seohee' after the renowned diplomat from the Goryeo Dynasty.

On July 3, the Navy's Naming Committee announced that the second submarine in the Jang Yeong-sil class would carry the name 'Seohee.' The name honors Seohee's military and diplomatic achievements, particularly his successful negotiations that led to the withdrawal of invading Khitan forces and the securing of the six provinces of Gangdong during the Goryeo period.

The Navy explained that it selects names of individuals who contributed to military strength, maritime power, resistance against foreign forces, and independence movements for its submarines.

The Seohee submarine is larger than the existing 3,000-ton Dosan Ahn Chang-ho class, featuring enhanced target detection and processing capabilities. The number of vertical launch systems for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) has increased from six to ten.

The Seohee is expected to be delivered to the Navy in 2028, with its launch ceremony anticipated to take place in the second half of this year.

Additionally, the Navy has confirmed the name 'Pyeongtaek' for its new 3,600-ton frigate, the fifth in its class, measuring 129 meters in length.
