Blue House Denies Reports of Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho's Resignation

The Blue House has denied reports that Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho recently expressed his intention to resign in opposition to the abolition of supplementary investigative powers.

Kang Yu-jeong, the Blue House spokesperson, stated during a briefing at a press center in Brasília, Brazil, on July 26 (local time), "There has been no official confirmation of the minister's resignation."

When asked if there were indications of Jeong's resignation, Kang reiterated, "There has been no official confirmation of a resignation."

It has been reported that Jeong has conveyed his desire to return to the ruling party through Blue House aides.

Kang also reaffirmed the Blue House's position regarding the Democratic Party's announcement to process a bill this week to fully abolish supplementary investigative powers, stating, "We will respect any decision made."

Kang emphasized, "The important thing is to prepare for the situation that follows the conclusion," adding that they would address and supplement any issues that arise afterward.

Earlier, Jeong attended a meeting of the National Assembly's Legislative and Judiciary Committee, where he responded to questions from reporters about whether he intended to resign due to the party's stance on abolishing supplementary investigative powers. He remarked, "It is inappropriate to discuss such matters while the president is abroad working for the national interest," and added, "My position is not a significant issue."

Jeong stated, "Once the Public Prosecution Service and the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency are launched on October 2, I believe 95% of the prosecution reform will be achieved," and noted that since the major framework of prosecution reform is mostly complete, he has been considering that new wine should be put into new wineskins even before the announcement of the abolition of supplementary investigative powers.

He also mentioned, "My health is currently not very good. I have been experiencing significant sleep disturbances for several months," and indicated that he had been discussing this matter with those around the president.
