China has successfully begun mass production of high-performance synthetic rubber using rare earth elements as catalysts.


PetroChina's subsidiary, Dushanzi Petrochemical, has completed a factory in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region capable of producing 100,000 tons of rare earth butadiene rubber annually, according to a report by the South China Morning Post on July 29.


Dushanzi Petrochemical developed the rare earth butadiene rubber in collaboration with the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, which is recognized as China's leading catalyst research institution.


Traditional synthetic rubber is primarily produced using metal catalysts such as nickel, cobalt, and titanium. In contrast, Dushanzi's butadiene rubber utilizes rare earth elements as catalysts, allowing for a more uniform molecular structure. This innovation can reduce tire wear and extend the lifespan of tires made from synthetic rubber.


Rare earth tires are expected to be primarily used in electric vehicles. Since electric cars are 200 to 500 kg heavier than internal combustion engine vehicles, their tires wear out more quickly. Additionally, electric vehicles can achieve maximum output instantly, leading to faster acceleration from a standstill, which further contributes to tire wear. Rare earth tires can help mitigate these issues. For the same reasons, rare earth tires are also anticipated to be used in large trucks and aircraft. Their potential applications in military vehicles and fighter jets highlight their value in the defense industry.


The report noted that China is not only securing its supply of rare earth minerals and manufacturing rare earth products but is also gaining competitiveness in high-value materials that utilize rare earth elements.
