Samsung Electronics is establishing a large-scale production infrastructure at its Gwangju facility to respond to the rapidly growing global HVAC market.
On August 19, Samsung Electronics signed an investment agreement with the Gwangju Metropolitan City and Plack Group Korea at the Gwangju City Hall. The ceremony was attended by Gwangju Mayor Min Hyung-bae, Samsung Electronics DA Division Vice President Kim Cheol-ki, and Plack Group Korea CEO Lim Sung-taek.
Samsung will invest approximately 240 billion won to set up a new HVAC production line covering an area of 21,800 square meters (about 6,600 pyeong), equivalent to three soccer fields, within the third campus of its Gwangju facility. This marks the first major investment in production facilities since the establishment of the Gwangju site for home appliance manufacturing 37 years ago in 1989.
The new production line is expected to begin operations in early 2028, focusing on the production of cooling distribution units (CDUs), which are key equipment from the global central air conditioning specialist Plack Group, acquired by Samsung last year.
CDUs are essential components of AI data center liquid cooling systems, precisely controlling the pressure and temperature of the cooling water generated by chillers and removing impurities before supplying it to server equipment.
Additionally, the production plan includes fan wall units (FWUs), computer room air handling units (CRAHs), and air handling units (AHUs) for large buildings.
Samsung plans to utilize the new Gwangju line as the 15th global production facility for Plack Group, actively targeting the B2B HVAC market, including AI data centers and advanced manufacturing facilities. The company aims to provide energy management solutions by integrating Plack Group's central air conditioning technology with the B2B connectivity and integrated control platform 'SmartThings Pro' and building integrated solutions (b.IoT).
Kim Cheol-ki, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' DA Division, stated, "Samsung Electronics will rapidly expand its HVAC business, a future growth driver, to become a leading company in the global market. The establishment of this production line in Gwangju will serve as a crucial foundation for securing differentiated competitiveness in the HVAC business."
