SEOUL, August 19 (AJP) - LG Energy Solution (LGES) has begun full operations at its plant in Lansing, Michigan, strengthening its production network for energy storage systems (ESS) to meet growing demand across North America, the company said on Wednesday.

The facility is LGES' seventh such plant in North America and will serve as a combined manufacturing hub for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for ESS and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries for electric vehicles, with total annual battery-cell production capacity exceeding 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

The company said LFP batteries produced at the plant will be supplied through its U.S. subsidiary Vertech to major customers involved in power infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.

LGES had about 140 GWh of ESS orders in North America as of the end of last year and secured more than 3 trillion won (US$2.2 billion) in new orders in the first half of this year.

EV batteries produced at the plant will be supplied to Toyota under a battery supply agreement signed with the Japanese automaker in 2023 and are expected to be used in vehicles including Toyota's midsize Highlander SUV, which will be produced at its plant in Georgetown, Kentucky.

With the plant now in full-scale production, LGES said it has completed a five-site production network serving the North American ESS market, comprising three wholly owned facilities in Lansing and Holland, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada, as well as two joint-venture plants in Ohio and Tennessee.

LGES said it aims to secure more than 50 GWh of annual ESS LFP production capacity in North America by the end of 2026, as demand rises with the expansion of AI data centers and electricity grids.

"[LGES] has called Michigan home for more than 20 years, and we're proud to see that investment continue with the start of production at its Lansing facility. This project will create up to 1,700 good-paying jobs, helping more working families make it in Michigan. It's part of our historic work to invest in clean energy, electric vehicle manufacturing, and battery storage in communities across Michigan," said Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at the plant's opening ceremony.

The ceremony was also attended by U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Rep. Tom Barrett, as well as LGES CEO Kim Dong-myung and other company executives.

"The operation of the Lansing plant is an important milestone that will accelerate the growth of our North American business," Kim said.

LGES has been pursuing a strategic restructuring of its global production network over the past two and a half years, expanding its focus beyond electric vehicles to ESS and other emerging businesses while seeking to improve the efficiency of its manufacturing facilities.

The Lansing plant is a key part of this strategy, giving the company additional local production capacity as it seeks to capture a larger share of the rapidly expanding North American ESS market.
