Samsung Heavy Industries is continuing its order momentum in the commercial ship sector even after achieving its annual target.
On August 31, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it has secured an order for two container ships from a shipping company in Africa, valued at 444.5 billion won. The vessels are scheduled for delivery by December 2028.
With this latest order, Samsung Heavy Industries has accumulated a total of 36 vessels worth $6.1 billion in the commercial ship sector this year, surpassing its order target of $5.7 billion. The orders include 14 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers (including one LNG-FSRU), two ethane carriers, four gas carriers, four container ships, and 12 crude oil carriers.
In the offshore sector, the company has achieved a total of $10.5 billion in orders this year, reaching 76% of its annual target of $13.9 billion, which includes two floating LNG production facilities (FLNG).
A Samsung Heavy Industries official stated, "Demand for container ships is active, particularly for vessels in the 8,000 to 13,000 TEU range, due to the need for eco-friendly ship replacements. Since we have exceeded our annual order target for commercial ships, we plan to focus more on selective orders that prioritize profitability."
Looking ahead, Samsung Heavy Industries is expected to accelerate additional orders in the offshore sector, particularly for FLNGs, in the second half of the year. The company has already secured a contract for the first FLNG unit from Delfin Midstream in the United States and is in discussions for contracts for the second and third units.
