The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards is set to establish a national standard (KS) for evaluating the performance of road deck panels, which are temporary structures installed to allow vehicle passage during road excavation work. This standard will assess factors such as slip resistance, deflection, and cracking under repeated loads.
On September 29, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that the national standard, titled 'KS F 8091 Performance Testing Method for Road Deck Panels,' will be officially enacted on September 30.
Road deck panels are used in construction sites and roads to facilitate vehicle traffic over excavated areas. Although these panels are designed for direct vehicle use, there has been no standardized testing method to evaluate their performance, leading to variability in results based on testing procedures and conditions.
To address this issue, the agency collaborated with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, industry stakeholders, and testing and research institutions to develop three evaluation methods for the KS: slip resistance testing, static load testing, and weld joint fatigue testing. The slip resistance test will utilize a continuous measurement approach that considers the surface roughness of the panels to provide a more objective assessment of actual slip resistance levels when vehicles pass over them.
The static load test will specify the direction of load application and the position of displacement gauges to ensure consistent evaluation of how much the road deck panels bend or deform under vehicle loads. The weld joint fatigue test will assess the likelihood of cracks forming in the welds as vehicles repeatedly pass over the panels, with a defined frequency of less than 3 Hz for repeated loading.
This new KS aims to standardize testing methods across different testing institutions and sites, allowing for consistent measurement of slip resistance, deflection, and weld durability. By reducing evaluation discrepancies based on testing conditions, it provides a common benchmark for contracting agencies and manufacturers in the performance comparison of road deck panels.
The new national standard will be available for review starting September 30 on the e-Nara Standard Certification, the comprehensive information system for national standards and certifications.
Kim Dae-ja, head of the agency, stated, 'Since road deck panels are facilities that allow general vehicles to pass during construction, standardized testing methods are crucial for ensuring quality and safety. We will continue to promote the standardization of testing and evaluation methods in areas closely related to industrial safety.'
