The National Railway Corporation has begun efforts to upgrade the 1,111 km section of the Trans-Mongolian Railway between Altanbulag and Zamiin-Uud, as well as to explore new railway projects in Mongolia.

On September 30, the National Railway Corporation announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ulaanbaatar Railway (UBTZ) at its headquarters in the Seoul metropolitan area to jointly promote key railway projects.

UBTZ is a joint venture between Mongolia and Russia responsible for the operation and maintenance of major railway infrastructure, including the Trans-Mongolian Railway.

The two organizations agreed to share information on Mongolia's short-, medium-, and long-term railway network development projects and the upgrade of the Altanbulag-Zamiin-Uud section, as well as to jointly identify new projects. They will also collaborate on education and talent development in the railway sector.

In 2021, the corporation secured a contract worth 42.5 billion won for the construction of a signaling and communication system for the Tavan Tolgoi-Zunbayan line. This project involved the design, construction, and testing of signaling and communication systems for a 415 km single-track railway, which was completed in 2023.

In 2024, the corporation won a contract worth approximately 58 billion won for the construction of the Ulaanbaatar subway project management consultancy. This project covers 17.7 km of the Ulaanbaatar urban railway line, with the corporation responsible for project management and oversight until September 2030.

In March, the corporation completed a preliminary feasibility study for the construction of the Ulaanbaatar-Kharhorin railway, reviewing traffic demand forecasts, route planning, structural planning, and economic and financial aspects. Plans are underway to link this with a full feasibility study.

Jung Jin-hyuk, the chairman of the National Railway Corporation, expressed hope that the memorandum of understanding would broaden exchanges and cooperation in the railway sector between the two countries, stating, "We will do our best to achieve tangible results, such as securing additional projects in Mongolia's railway sector based on our respective experiences and capabilities."
