HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is accelerating its offshore wind business by signing a contract for the Taean offshore substation project.
On October 2, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that it held a contract signing ceremony with Taean Wind Power Co., Ltd. for the design, procurement, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of the Taean offshore substation. Taean Wind Power Co., Ltd. is a joint venture between Singapore's renewable energy company Vuna Energy, Denmark's green energy investment developer Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and the state-owned Korea Western Power.
The signing ceremony was attended by Won Kwang-sik, head of the Marine Energy Division at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Clément Helbig de Balzac, CEO of Taean Wind Power Co., Ltd.
Following a preliminary design contract signed in March and a priority supply contract in July, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been recognized for its proactive capabilities in offshore substation execution. After detailed discussions, the two companies formalized this main contract, marking the project's official launch.
The offshore substation is a key facility that transmits electricity generated by wind turbines in offshore wind farms to the mainland. The Taean offshore substation will be installed near Gaido-ri in Taean County and will elevate the voltage of electricity produced at a 500MW offshore wind farm before transmitting it to land.
In 2025, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries received basic design verification for its self-developed 500MW offshore substation model from DNV, a Norwegian classification society, and completed detailed design verification in August, becoming the first in the domestic offshore substation sector to have its design's compliance and safety recognized according to international regulations and standards.
With this project, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to explore collaboration opportunities for subsequent offshore wind projects being pursued by Singapore's Vuna Energy, Denmark's CIP, and Korea Western Power.
An official from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries stated, "We will carry out this offshore substation project stably based on our accumulated marine plant capabilities and will seek to secure additional business opportunities in the renewable energy sector while enhancing our market competitiveness."
