The Ministry of Science and ICT has increased the cybersecurity budget for next year by 44% to address threats from artificial intelligence (AI).
On October 6, the ministry announced that it has allocated 523.1 billion won for private sector cybersecurity, up from 363.4 billion won this year.
According to the ministry, the increased budget will be used for developing AI models specialized in security (70 billion won) and next-generation security technologies (55 billion won).
Additionally, 63.2 billion won will be allocated for the operation of the Korea Internet & Security Agency's (KISA) Internet Response Center, establishing a 24-hour monitoring system.
Support for small businesses will also be strengthened, with plans to invest 50 billion won to provide AI security solutions to 10,000 small enterprises that lack security capabilities.
During a National Assembly audit of the ministry, Vice Minister Baek Kyung-hoon stated, "We will increase the cybersecurity budget by 44% to respond to cyber threats and will work on creating standard manuals for managing and responding to ongoing incidents, disseminating them among related companies and government agencies."
He also emphasized the need to enhance comprehensive response capabilities across government agencies, noting, "We are working to secure our own capabilities in anticipation of increased cyber threats due to AI, and we will respond through the development of specialized security models and frontier AI models."
