The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the Missile Administration conducted the tests to assess the readiness of underwater combat systems and improve the Navy’s ability to carry out strategic missions.
The report did not specify whether the missiles were fired from a submarine or an underwater test platform. It described the weapons as “strategic,” suggesting an intended nuclear role.
“The test-fire aimed to examine the current mobilized posture of the underwater combat systems and contributed to getting the Navy skilled in performing its strategic missions and showcasing high reliability, trustworthiness and ability of the war deterrents of the DPRK,” KCNA said in its English-language dispatch.
KCNA said the launches had no adverse impact on the safety of neighboring countries.
South Korea’s military is yet to publicly announced the launches.
The tests followed Monday’s launch of tactical ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea. North Korea said Tuesday that launch was intended to “confirm the success in the research for the technical upgrading of an important core element.”
