The type test, overseen by Shanghai-based certification body TICW, put Hanwha's cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation and semiconductive materials through separate trials with Chinese cable makers Qingdao Hanhe and TBEA.
It assessed insulation performance and long-term reliability under extreme-voltage conditions.
The result adds to the company's existing qualification at the 400kV class. Hanwha is also seeking certification from KEMA, an international testing and certification body, to widen sales to high-voltage cable makers beyond Asia.
The company expects global sales of its super extra-high-voltage (SEHV) XLPE to nearly double this year from 2025. Sales of its ultrahigh-voltage materials in China, including 325kV-class SEHV XLPE, are forecast to grow about threefold over the same period.
"Passing the 500kV-class type test is a significant milestone that shows Hanwha Solutions has secured globally competitive technological reliability in materials for ultrahigh-voltage transmission cables," said Carlo Scarlata, head of the company's Wire & Cable division.
Higher-voltage lines carry more power over longer distances with less loss, which matters more as remote wind and solar farms feed growing grids.
China's State Grid plans to invest 4 trillion yuan ($597.8 billion) in its network from 2026 to 2030, up 40 percent from the previous five years, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
